Ferry to Bolivar

Afternoon excursion -
No particular destination
Just a heart's hesitation
To let such a day
Slip away
Unnoticed.

Flying fish
And swimming bird
Might seem absurd.
But silver flashes
Above wave's crest
And dinner dangles
From pelican's pouch.

A flutter of seagulls
Are ferry's flaring train
Each hoping to gain
Tummy treasures
As bags of bread
Are emptied
For their pleasure.

On return to Galveston,
Dolphins cavorting
Have parents exhorting
Kids to look and see
Neptune's gift.
I watch and wish
You here with me.

Watching lovers embrace
I taste your kiss
For I do so miss
Being half of two.
Inhaling salt mist -
Did a drop of this water
Ever dampen your face?

Hoping for handout,
A gull looks at me
Keeping pace
Effortlessly.
I could reach and touch
But he reads my mind
And moves farther away.

He needn't have worried
I've already grasped flight.
I remember soaring
Though I've never had wings.
I only needed
You.

I love the birds.  I've only been down to the coast a couple of times, but I loved the ocean.  It's amazing it's all the same state, my desert and your island.

this poem lives and breathes
and I hear the cries of the birds

Whew!  What a relief (for me - after reading what you said in Discussions, I was expecting to hear about hurricane devastation) and what a beautiful and thoughtful gift to those in Galveston and on the Bolivar Peninsula, so badly hit by Ike!  I wish I could herd them all into Pip to imbibe the peace and serenity and the water lapping at the side of the ferry and esPECially the gulls, and even more your loving concern for them.

So beautiful! Thank you for sharing this very vivid piece, I felt it intensely, as if being there with you.

The Lady: Thank you so much... I don't think there can be a greater compliment... I'm grateful. *S*

Owl: One of these days, I'll try to write the horror... but right now, living through it is more than enough. *S* Thank you so much, sweet lady...

Margherita: Thank you very much! *S* I hope those happy times come again... soon! *S*

threadbare: Thank you for your wonderful response! *S*

serenity: Oh, lady... I know you know what is to see the remains of a place you love... and the hope that against the odds, it will live again. Thank you!!

The only thing wrong about Suthern's poetry is the lack of posting..
