It’s been a long road, I will have to admit; But I’ve faced the fact, pard- It’s high time, I quit- When I check out this morning, this motel abode… Will be next to my last, since I’m quitting the road. Kingman ain’t bad, for a battered old pro- I made me some change, and I won the short go. The contestants are younger, take that to the bank- And the stock, I’ll admit, seems to’ve gotten more rank. I started the circuit, back in eighty-two- I was “wolf of the world”, so what else could I do? An eighteen year old, with an ego too big- A bullrope and bell, and a saddlebronc rig. I married in ninety, divorced in a year- The long, lonely nights brought my wife many tears. I was a fool, I’m admitting to that- In those days a home was where I hung my hat. I’m heading to Little Rock, got one more show. My entries are paid for the State Fair, you know? Win, lose, or draw, ride ‘em good, or get throwed- It’s the moment I’ve dreaded, I’m on my last road. |
