Sometimes my writing doesn’t fit my skin Usually when I am tired I push at the box and break down the sides and I hate the poetry that spills forth Because, I still see the sea when I close my eyes I hear the surf pounding rocks that loom from the fog and I am homesick for the cry of the eagles catching the drift of the wind It’s times like these melancholy nights when tears thicken in my throat and my eyes burn It’s times like these that I long to smell the rain in alder patches thick and raspberry bushes scented And, I miss the light touch of mist on my face I am homesick for the inlet and my mountains cutting into blue skies with crisp white peaks I hear the Magpies torturing the cat, the dog, me It doesn’t matter to them - it’s all a good laugh at my expense If I open my ears, I can hear the wind whispering in the Children’s Grove and the Sanctuary (I didn’t know that everyone did not name their woods) The moss is soft under bare feet like cushions of over-stuffed pillows on Grandma’s couch And, I know that the dewberries will sweeten my tongue The Fiddle Ferns will open in another week or so and you can’t grow Morning Glories in the summer Can you tell that I am homesick? I don’t want to write poems about angst and anger I don’t want to break down the walls of my box I like walls and safety nets and memories of old doll houses passed down from child to child, and homemade rag dolls I smile over the thought of egg box tea sets And this summer, I will have a picnic in the tall grass with a jar of ice cold chocolate milk and a peanut butter sandwich But, right now – I am homesick and it hurts to swallow --- Alison |

Oh my but I felt the sorrow and pain in this piece. I think I would have to feel the same were I ever to give up my sea and mountains for any length of time. Sometimes the writing out of the "lumps in our throats" is the only way to survive. Nicely done. |

This bought tears to my eyes, not because it was sad...but because of the powerful emotions it not only delivers, but evokes...you have penned well my friend...outstanding...felt those bittersweet memories, as I love nature's waters and her noises as well...hugs and love Lee J. |

Dear Alison, you do speak in strong emotions to me too with those white mountain peaks! What you say about the dolls made me think of mine, which I gave away to a lady who had taken care of my mother and who was crazy about it. When I told my daughter that I had given away that doll, she almost could not tolerate it and she had difficulty in forgiving me. I am not attached to things generally. The memory though is very vivid and there in my mind and heart they remain intact. Beautiful, intense write! Love and hugs. Margherita ![]() |

Margherita, What a poignant story. I hope that your daughter has forgiven you. My family is mixed - most don't care about our 'treasures' - but I am the keeper of the memories and many of the 'trinkets' of our past. Love, Alison |

This poem brought tears and flooded me with memories of my childhood. Both my parents are gone and there doesn't seem to be a home to miss anymore. I have lived in several homes since and my most of my heart is where my home is; however there is a sliver that wishes I had a place to make me feel homesick. I loved this and most of all I love all your poetry. To me, you are a 'real' poet. hugs, Marti |

A, Somewhere in the attic, I have a picture of me taken at Cook inlet. When I came home, my mother had it framed and hung over the mantlepiece...I always used to think that she either loved the scenery or was proud of me...I later found out that it was to keep my kid sis away from the fire....John ![]() [This message has been edited by effjayel (03-06-2008 04:53 PM).] |

a fine ‘penning!’… I am particularly fond of: “ I still see the sea when I close my eyes I hear the surf pounding rocks that loom from the fog and I am homesick for the cry of the eagles catching the drift of the wind”; “I long to smell the rain in alder patches thick and raspberry bushes scented”; “mountains cutting into blue skies with crisp white peaks”; And especially: “I don’t want to write poems about angst and anger I don’t want to break down the walls of my box” [There is quite enough self-psychoanalysis wearing masks of ‘poetry!’] much sustained applause for this v. effective and personal write! |

Wonderful write, Alison. I don't actually have a home to be homesick over but I do want to "go back" - back to my youth perhaps or just to somewhere before what is now. Helen |
