Felix shows up
in the shower
after ninth grade
gym class.

The gym teacher notices
that his back is covered
with nasty looking welts
and bruises.

The gym teacher
says to him-self—

“That’s too bad,
I’m sorry to see that.

It’s none of my business.”

brought out tears of me. We can not ask anyone to take one extra step. But I always admire who did.  What a childhood Felix had. Sigh!!!

Thanks Tom,

Looking back 55 years or so ago, I think some gym teachers would have done something, and some would not.  Of course it's really hard to judge people's character, and I'd never attempt it.

Maybe he once was nobody's business
but I think many of us have truly come to care for Felix.

We'd make him our business.

Nice writing...I know that they're more serious about issues like child abuse and drunk driving now...James

Oh, Bobby, this hurts again so much. There were times when beating children was deemed necessary in the educational scheme ... not that we have really evolved so much! Such things still happen, though there are many different ways of abuse now.
Human rights are officially enumerated, but not observed sadly.

Dear RDB,

More tales of Felix smiling are coming up.  Thanks for caring about Felix, and wanting to see him smile.

James,

Things are getting better for kids all the time.  It's a good thing.

Margherita,

This abuse of Felix occurred in his foster home, not at school.

Child abuse still happens in many homes.

As the great African American author Willard Motly titled his classic book.

"Knock On Any Door"

Bob

This is really sad & unfortunately (still) happening all to often in todays society.

When these morons are taken to task and I can only speak for the UK, they get little more than a slap on the wrist. Personally I vote for them getting multiple slaps across the back of the head with a 4 x 2.

If any one did any harm to my daughter, I would end up behind bars for what I would do to them. The real kicker here is that I would probably do more time than the child abuser.... Give Felix my best

Trust me, I would have made it MY business!

I doubt if there are enough hugs in this world to eradicate the pains that Felix has had to endure in this lifetime! ~ But I'm sending a bunch of them hoping that they can help even a little bit!

Earth Angel,

Felix says "Thanks for all the hugs Hon".  They help more than you can imagine.

But the gym teacher is wrong to think that it is none of his business.  When a child is abused it is everyone`s business.
