Silently on naked feet,
Felix and Wawa padded to the river.
Pushing through the tangled trees
to the overhanging pier,
they sought waters cool relief
from the noisy humid night.

Knowing it was dangerous there;
strange ones lurking in the brush,
quickly sloughing off their clothes
they ran, diving off the pier
into the black glistening river,
loud shouts turned to gurgling pops.

Swimming to the sodden shore,
clambering up from the river,
refreshed they laughed and giggled.
Running back on to the pier,
anxious for another dip,
they found two strangers waiting.

They chased Felix and Wawa down the pier.
Felix felt a rope burn his neck,
his hands barely tore it off.
They ran faster towards the street,
the strangers dared not follow,
they were safe beneath the El.

The El train roaring over,
they ran stark raving naked
up Fairmont Avenue towards Wawa's place.
Knowing Wawa’s Dad would be soused,
wouldn't know they had no clothes;
they ran through the open door.

Wawa's Dad sat slouching watching a
blank flickering TV screen,
staring blindly at the tube
he didn't notice anything,
just went on watching nothing,
while they lay naked on the floor.

Waiting till the streets were clear,
before the light of morning,
sneaking up the silent street,
out across the tangled wood,
on across the jutting pier,
they went back to get their clothes.

Mom asked about Felix’s rope burns,
asked where he had spent the night,
he told her what had happened,
she smacked him hard in the face,
told him to be more careful,
and walked out to go to work.

Roniece,

Yes it was.  Felix still has signs of the rope burns.

After that he limited himself to daylight swimming in the river off Penn Treaty Park.

You do this style of 'reality' writes more finely than those
of anyone I have seen (and the 'trend' is that they seem to
just be getting better and better)!

[NOT something that I am even remotely capable
of...regardless of my own abominable experiences
  in 'life!']

continuing applause!!

Vividly descriptive. It played out as though I was watching a movie!

Poor Felix ~ and lucky Felix! May you continue to entertain us with his adventures!

Secondhanddreampoet,

I’m pleased they work for you, and that they seem to be getting better.  You’re making me blush.

I’ll never forget a quote by James T. Farrell about his characters in the Danny O’Neil trilogy.

“They glory in the horror they create.”

Take a whack at it, you can do it.

Earth Angel,

Thanks hon, I’m very happy it was vivid for you.  It’s all in the details.

Your style is different here from what I am used to reading from your Bones` pieces.  I enjoyed your tale and would have to say that Felix is lucky and unlucky in this installment.

I guess readers on this site would be lucky to get a chance to read this installment.  A similiar version appears in `City Boy Stays Alive`.  From what I have read so far there appears to have been a number of perverts that used to prey on children in the hood.  Since I don`t know Philadelphia and the area I didn`t know that kids would escape from the hood for a night swim in spite of the danger.  I guess it must have been very hot for them to risk their lives.
