Angelo has a pet dog.
It’s a big, friendly,
German Shorthaired Pointer
named Hilda.

When the family
wants to go on vacation,
they have to send her
to what Sally refers to as,
“Doggy Dachau”,
or a kennel.

The kennel
that their veterinarian
has recommended
is out in the burbs.

Felix and Angelo drive
up to the kennel
in the morning.

On the way up,
they pass miles, and miles
of cars loaded with people
headed towards the city for work.

“Dad, where are all those people going?”

“They’re going to work in the city son.”

“But Dad,
why don’t they just
live in the city?

They don’t look real happy
being stuck in traffic.”

“They don’t want
to live in the city son,
it’s too near us.”

“Oh.”

Dear Bobby, I love Angelo's remark, he has a logical mind. But so many people are ready to cope with traffic, just for a good morning and evening take in of fresh air and silence. I think that is the main reason.

For explaining the phenomena. Remember however, if they didn't drive their cars to the city, then the air our children here in the city breathe twenty-four hours a day would be a lot cleaner.

Most people that live in the city, and work there, take public transportation to work. More suburbanites could ride the train to their work here in Philadelphia.

Yes, I agree with you, it's the same problem here in Rome and now people use those enormous cars that look like Panzers and occupy so much space and would be fit for overland cruises not for the city. When public transportation works fine, there is indeed no excuse ...

I like your “Panzer” simile. A lot of it seems to be pretentious show.

Of course, a lot of people from the burbs do take the train. That is a very good, and kind thing.

It is an evidence that the traffic is not reasonable...Two summers ago I was in Beijing, we had to take the train and therefore go to the central station (a very impressive one) We have 3 miles to accomplish...Because of the traffic it took 60 minutes, we would have have shorter time just walking..This day I saw the absurdity of all the system..We must rethink our conception of access and crossing in very big towns...I hope our children will do it....

I’m glad you liked the poem.

It wasn’t really intended to be a pleasant poem. It was written to show the social absurdity of going through hell everyday just to avoid living near people who other people consider to be “undesirables”.

Nice writing...having lived in the Los Angeles/Long Beach area I observed the reasons why people lived in the Country but worked in the City...the good paying jobs were in the City but the cost of buying homes in the City was more than most young couple could pay, and so the further they moved from the City the cheaper the homes were...with gas prices so high now I don't know if this trend will contine...of course there is the option of car pooling...having done that I can say it added a few extra hours to my work day...James

That's interesting about LA. Things are different here in Philly. Here, the houses in the city cost much less than the estates out in the burbs. Philly real estate is a real good deal. That's why so many young families with their kids live here.
