old highways have a texture on their skin
like something I have tasted before
and am still hungry to know again

the lady trees seem to stand guard
like they know where eden is
and have their mouths covered in leaves

I guess I don't mind the mornings
when it still seems like night
and no one really knows my sound

but then I recognize the quiet of you
and how your buttons are elsewhere
as if you were in some other mind

and suddenly I am sipping that bitter wine
that burns the tongue of my eyes
and in the distance I hear the lady trees

with their vulgarity of laughing silence
