A sunbeam strikes the pavement
and falls upon a tiny, green stalk
fiercely pushing it's way up
through a spider vein crack in the sidewalk.
Green leaves become more visible each day
until finally it dances in the breeze,
victorious against a sea of grey.
He tosses his bright yellow head in defiance,
for he's the new guy in the neighborhood,
a true champion of self-reliance.
He's a force to be admired and respected
on the mean, city streets
but his heroic battle has just begun.
Now he must survive an army of feet.
But this little flower is a tough guy.
He enjoys his moment in the sun,
knowing well that he must fade and die,
for the resilient flower has learned
not to worry about neighborhood bullies
for he is surprisingly strong...
and he will return.

Dear Ida, I love this little tough guy. You wrote a delightful poem, totally after my heart. Always it moves me to see in what conditions plants grow and succeed in surviving.

Wonderful!

Love,
Margherita

Thank you, Margharita. I wrote this for a friend from "Philly" who might appreciate a different way of looking at flowers.

What a lovely gift! hmmmmm, dear Ida, I did give it a try too, but I admit your attempt is poignantly original and might succeed in stirring some reconsidering!

Again, my compliments!

Margherita

Thanks, yann. I suppose this is a bit different for me. It's always good to try something new.

Thanks dear Ida,

Some people would say—“everyone should love flowers” while others of a more practical nature would ask—“is there any money in it?” now I say--“as long as flowers don’t bother me, I won’t bother them”.

Actually there is a lot of money in flowers.
If you don't think so,try buying some for Valentine's day.

Yo Ida,

I've got relatives in the flower rackets, I won't even buy flowers from them.

Much enjoyed, Ida.  I had a strange response, I suppose - tears came into my eyes, for the tough little guy.  Oops, now they are spilling.  It gave me the same feeling as GK Chesterton's "The Donkey" does.

Thank you for honouring the brave little fellow.

Oh, Ida, what a wonderful attitude that precious little flower has! A tender, sweet write. You are one who truly sees and feels and  brings attention to the microcosmic world around us.

Love to you and to that spunky little flower.

Thanks for your comment and "the little tough guy" thanks you too. I am hoping that nature is even tougher than we think.

I think that tough guy from "Philly" will appreciate this as much as I do, Ida! This is beautiful poetry with an extended metaphor in the flower to speak for all who toil in the daily challenges of life.

Thank you both. Hi Art, glad to see you here, you haven't been on either site for a couple of days and I was starting to worry about you.

Hi, Ida! Not to worry, but thanks! I took a little hiatus after my niece took the little nephew to Atlanta,GA for the week. It's good to be back, and I'm pleased to see your new work!

Ida,

When I see little flowers blooming on the tundra, I imagine that their existance is much like this that you describe.

Wonderful.

True talent!!! makes you think of nature in a different way. Flowers are the beauty of spring, summer, and fall. I look forward to their battle every year and hope each one of mine makes it through. Thanks for your lovely thoughts!!

I love Philly- and those brave plants which grow from the sidewalk cracks- or better yet from the groove of the track overhead, the abandoned warehouse doors used to roll aside.

I'd love to hear this poem from the POV of the flower, with his South Philly tough guy accent, "Yo wa-chout! I'm growin' he-ah!"
