she would wear you down if you looked twice
and didn’t notice her grooved edge
hidden under careless come-hithers; she has laughter and knives in her eyes and not one
ounce of hesitation. the way she smokes makes you
think she is a dragon. no, just
a dragonfly actively escaping
her own boundaries, lines she drew
all over herself when she
was unbroken as a child.
she wakes up sometimes at 2 in the morning
and doesn’t know why so she makes up the dreams
she doesn’t have in sleep, and so much time
has passed since she stopped
living in the moment that
all her memories have become kinder than strangers.
at one time she was beautiful, or so the boys
told her once they’d cornered her
in dark corners so she figured
it was true. or true enough.
theses days she doesn’t hold too tightly to
familiar handles, and she doesn’t hold
hands at all. if you could get close enough to
taste her you would know that
she’s not as poisonous as she would like
but she still bites.

correction- the lines should have been split this way... i hope

"hidden under careless come-hithers; she has laughter
and knives in her eyes and not one ounce
of hesitation. the way she smokes makes you"
