Through With Rodeo |

While sitting in that airport lounge- Just staring at my knee. I thought about that doctor's words, And what they meant to me... He said, "I hate to be the one, To say 'I told you so'. But you'd better find another trade- You're through with Rodeo." He said it like he'd tell me- "It's a real nice day outside." Little could he realize- That something in me died... The only thing I want to do, The only life I know... Crumbled when I heard the words- "You're through with Rodeo." I've haven't told my wife yet- For a while she might be glad. And think it is a good thing, My traveling made her mad. But soon she'll start to realize- This man she does not know. The one she loved died with the words, "You're through with Rodeo." I'll probably go on breathing- But I have to sell my gear, No use in keeping it around, To bring me bitter tears... No more dreams of the Finals- That I never made, you know? Just another broke-down cowboy, Who is through with Rodeo." |

Super post on a sad note. I felt much the same when I ended my real estate career, after 24/7 for so many years. Rae |

first, loved your write...when my good friend, Don, heard the same words, he began to make and sell tack at the auctions...soon you found him putting so much of his time and enthusiasm there...slower pace, but it kept him close to his lifetime's love |

Nice to see you back, Gunslinger. I've been watching for your poems. We all feel the same way when we can no longer spend our time with what we're used to doing. I think we just have to find new things to enjoy. Lack of choice tends to make me very flexible. Ida |

Gunslinger, I can begin to imagine how devastated you must feel. My beloved horse Flicka, went to Heaven 6 years ago on this past 28th April, but I am still shattered without him. He was 37½ and the happiest, healthiest most loved horse(by all who met him, not just me, and not just people, but other animals too, notably dogs and cats) I ever met. I haven't ridden rodeo, but when I had my first teaching post (43 years ago!) in a small town here in South Africa, I did ride (two oxen - not at the same time!) in an ox-riding competition, and stayed on longer (both times) than all the guys who were living in the same boarding house and who said I couldn't ride in the competition - let alone beat them - because I was a girl. Needless to say, that was like a red rag to a bull, so, of course, I had to beat them. It was great fun, and oh boy! do I realise and admire what skill you rodeo riders have, especially on horses who are more agile and buck and twist faster than oxen. Do you have your own horse/s and will you still be able to ride? - Owl |
