It’s just past midnight.
Twelve-year-olds
Felix and Wawa
are sitting on the bank
of the Delaware
off Fairmont Avenue.

No one cares
they’re out that late,
so don’t even ask.

They’re sitting beside
the old wooden water pipes
going into the Delaware.

They’re watching big cargo ships
bring stuff in from far away.

Felix is telling Wawa
how much he misses his dad.

He's telling Wawa
about the water wheel
his dad made him,
before his dad
got taken away,
and locked-up.

Wawa tells Felix
he’ll see his dad again.

That won’t happen,
and they both know it.

It never did.

Hi Bobby, it is sad...I particularly enjoyed the part when they were watching ships, I live in a port too...I visited Philadelphie in 1996, it is a beautiful city...I slept in the youth hostel and saw the harbour, the museum, the liberty bell and some nice ancient political buildings...It was summer and it's a great memory talking about it...

Yes, I suppose it is a little emotion filled. It was actually a comforting experience for both Felix and Wawa, as Wawa had dad problems of his own.

BTW, I traveled through the mountains of Montana by train as a child. It's a lovely place.

I used to ride free all over because my mother worked for the railroad.

Do you mean to tell me you were in Philadelphia in 1996, and you didn't stop in to see me?  That's very naughty.

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay here.  It is a beautiful and wonderful city.

I still live only a few blocks from the river.  The kids, the dog, and I still go there often.

Glad to know Felix had WaWa to talk to. Felix experienced too much sadness in his life not to have a friend.

A very close moment between caring friends that would never be forgotten.

Simply stated poem ~ but deeply felt by this reader. I have had such memorable moments of sharing with friends ~ and I hold them dear to my heart.

Sad scenario for Felix regarding his father ~ but Felix is strong. Life has made him that way.

Watching ships moving in and out of the harbour is a scene that every boy would like to share with a father too, I understand the sadness of the moment, but it is alleviated by the presence of a true, caring friend.
