Great Grandmother,May I ?
~*Marge Tindal*~

"Great Grandmother, may I ?"
I oft exclaimed
Nothing ventured, nothing gained~

"Of course you may.",
was Great Grandmother's reply,
"You'll never know until you try."

So, try I did and often found
the venture uncovered thoughts
that I needed to expound~

Who would have known that a child of eight
would find the ink to contemplate
worldly visions, beyond her age,
explored at the knee of Great Grandmother 'sage'~

Legends that needed questioning
to find the reasons why
history often filled with tears
Great Grandmother's eye~

She would pause to reflect the question
answering with wisdom galore
Stored in the attic of this child's mind
later to explore~

The days of her recollections
lingered not far behind
in the head of the child now 'sponging'
legends from Great Grandmother's mind~

She spoke with elderly authority
making sure this girl would recall
the legends from the past
remembering them all~

The memories made poetry
steeped through the years
Caressed with poetic ink
often touched with tears~

My mission in life, as I know it to be,
is to share Great Grandmother's legends
so that others will come to see
"All that was, will someday be,
truthfully explained, for all to see."

And so ... I write~

What a great gift wrought in you, Marge! It is good to know how Great Grandmother was so influential in the shaping of your life and your artistry.

My great grandmother was a former slave girl who lived to be 99 (1852 - 1952). I had the privilege of knowing her and asking many a child's foolish questions that bore much fruit in my life.

Best wishes,

Art

Marge,

I bet she looks down upon you, smiling with pride.  Lovely work - and the history you share is the perfect message to help me begin my day.

How wonderful that you have such great memories of your greatgrandmother.  She must have been quite a sage!

Yesterday, I learned our 9th great-grandchild is due in September.  Sadly, I don't see them very often.

Mine was called "Big Mamma."

She wasn't fat, but just Mamma to the world.

Her skin was so soft and white...

y'brought me back to Texas with your sharing here.

Yes, Marge, indeed you do
write the write so right of you;
for the plains were 'ere explored;
yet you've the knowledge that we implore.

Gifts are gifts and yet we know
that stories are the stories told
and keepers are keepers of vast unknown
until the stories are deeply sown

So tell the tales we need to know
go to the roots from which you're sown
and yield to all the fruit of earth
remind them gently, of their birth.

Yes, dear Marge, it is your blessing and ours too that you understood early in childhood what your mission was. You accomplish it beautifully. Blessed be your Great Grandmother and her heritage.

Love and hugs.

Dear Marge, so much of a part of it all is to share, and teach the next generations isn’t it. This, ours, and your obligation of our own free will to enlighten, and inspire, will always be the legacy, that is humanity. And the difference you’ve made will reverberate throughout, forever.

Marge , May 1st was the two year anniversary of my mother's death. I recently received my grandmother's trunk (my mother's mother) and it has been sitting in my basement for several months. On May 1st, I had a strong urging to go and look through it. There were lots of treasures and I know my mother was behind the urging. I cried as I looked through her belongings and when I read your poem I was dumbfounded. Although she was not my great-grandmother, I learned so much from being with her and sitting at her knee!

Thank you, thank you for this beautiful masterpiece. It touched my heart and brought a tear and a smile.

hugs, Marti
