I’m going down home,
Back to the dark wood
And diamond studded skies.
I’m going to climb a tree,
A very tall tree, and I’ll be
A squirrel in an old man’s skin,
As I stand upon a high, strong bough
And stretch forth my arm,
And with a steady, mortal finger,
I’ll touch a star and give it
A new name, and from thence
I’ll be ready to say, goodbye,
Whenever that final goodbye
Should happen to come along.

Ah, is it not good to be old,
With the annals of time unwound
Like a long scroll, filled with wonders—
Of places, of moments, of family,
Of friends, when saying
that singular, most holy,

Goodbye?

I suppose we all have a fantasy or two floating around in the skull, waiting for recall now and then.

Yes Art, we all have many memories and fantasies about what we would like to
do and your very wise poem pretty much puts the into perspective.

Art,

This is very good.  I like it.  When I get that urge, I always climb up on to my flat roof, and look out over the city.

Such eloquence--What a beautful image of saying goodbye to life-when that time comes.

~ Those lines literally choked me up. They were so poignant ~ and beautiful. I could see the whole scenario being played out ~ except for the final goodbye...
