Felix Is Way Tempted

Fifteen year-old Felix,
like the good boy he is,
goes up and takes communion at Mass.

He comes back and sits down
pretty much up front
in his regular aisle seat.

People are passing by him,
standing in line.

A guy comes along,
Felix can’t help but notice,
the guy has a fat wallet
just kind of hanging loose
in his back pocket.

The guy’s asking for it.

Felix’s hand involuntary
reaches up to snatch
that fat wallet.

Then he remembers
where he’s at.

Jesus is up there,
and so is The Blessed Virgin,
they both have their eyes on Felix.

Felix reconsiders,
perhaps outside,
after Mass.

I think even God had to laugh when He saw Felix sometimes. In the sadness and stuggles, this Felix has an imp inside him that just makes me smile.

At Mass this morning I was following behind a guy with one big wallet in his back pocket. I just thought, now what would Felix think about that guy.
