in the shadows

In odd stray moments of forgetfulness,
alone here in my kitchen
while cooking for the children
an act on which my soul always seems to thrive,
any common scent or taste
unexpectedly
may throw a switch,
may strike a spark,
may lay to waste soft complacency;

suddenly I find I am exposed
thoughts encircled by barbarians
with torches of reality tied like tinder
thrown to light some dusty room
stocked with jumbled spice of hidden memories,
dried karma hanging like herbs in early times
when it was hard to stay alive,
flickering scenes that drag the nagging itch
of sad responsibility
out from underneath debris,
memories like debts,
tattered receipts and betting slips
left in scattered hurried vacancy,
scars of oldest crimes
roused from dormancy to wakefulness,
bitter taste of disappointing times
like stealing food to eat
or the constant weight of owning
killings to survive;

standing in a flash of mind
I'll brace in frozen judgement
delivered when acceptance
grabs the soul's equivalent of core strength in the body,
my body that must now begin again
finding balance,
simple movements starting in a force of will,
and return me to the simple presence of my life
in this kitchen
where today I'll feed my children,
without offering reparation
without asking for redemption,
and pray silently for them their lives of honest joy.

You just floored me, Charly.

wow

If you'd have mentioned the Glenn Miller, I think you would have frightened me a little.

Nice pic, too....all this and a distinguished gentleman too!

<--hadta do it.

And ohhhhhhhhh my, I understand the inclination of little girls at least trying to play Sharon Stone!

One by one they surface, and I'm reminded why I called this place home...

Oh, Lord of Heavens!
I'm in a hurry, but will be back again, to savor this slowly!
I wanted you back and here you are.

Love,

Back. I'll leave a tear here ...

and also a smile ... for your depth and your beauty.

Terrific new pic too! But your eyes' talk is secret now.

Love,
Margherita

Oh, move those other writes over to make room for this! What to say, that hasn't been said before, dearest man.
Your pen absolutely overflows with truth and reality.

Charly - You write and I read, sigh, cry and smile.  Sometimes one at a time and at other times all together.  Am sighing with understanding at this write.  You look deep ... when cooking!

powerful....
you always capture something "more" in your writing that I can't describe.
