It’s Friday night
and raining hard.

It’s cold and miserable.

Felix is out on the
playground
basketball court,
shooting hoops alone.

He’d be at home,
but everyone there
is drunk, and crazy.

He doesn’t feel like
getting beat-up.

So he’ll stay out,
get wet and cold,
and shoot hoops.

Bobby

I think that most kid's with family problems don't like the outside world to know what goes on at home.

I wish he had a warm dry place to hang out instead of getting cold & wet, I hope things pick up for him soon. We all want the little guy to have some sunshine in his days..

Such deep sadness, dear Bobby! Felix follows his instinct, better the rain than the beating-up!
There are homes in this world which are not homes, Felix' heart will try to manifest his dream of a real home. And he will succeed.

Love.

Passing shadows,

Yes, he could do that, but he never would.  Remember, Felix is a tough-guy.  He’d die of shame, or hounded to death, if word of that ever got around.

Ida,

Yes, that's true.  It never comes out, unless you show-up with a black eye.  Then you tell people that you ran into a door.

John,

Yes, he could go to the Settlement House and shoot hoops.  However, the Settlement House isn't open late at night.

Talking about gray skies, it's foggy this morning.  I can hear the fog horns blowing on the river.  It sounds spooky.

Margherita,

What you say is very true.  So much of our human behavior is based on the instinct for self preservation.  As they say, a house is not a home.

RDB,

Yes, that would be nice for Felix.  However, nice things don't always happen, and sometimes they never do.

If nobody bothered Felix, it should be a good time. Cold and rain might hurt him physically. But what in that house would hurt him mentally.

LadyTom,

This was inspired by a kid out on the playground last night.  He was alone in the rain for a while, and then two of his loyal friends came out and joined him.  They all got wet.

Luckily, were kind of tough around here.

If he had been at home he would have been hurt mentally, and physically.  Too many children have horrible lives.

Secondhanddreampoet,

Yes, people need to know.

Of course, the "Runaway American Dream" isn't what it's cracked up to be.

I think those not involved in it may be happier--if they are not hungry.

It is sad that a kid has to stay outside and shoot hoops out in the rain because he is afraid of what lurks at home.
