Listening to every heart

Snowflakes & Thoughtful Thanks

What arbor vitae that did not shatter
after bowing to icy weights
are now allowing blue sky moments
between snowflake flurries…
but only two inches of white today.  So far.

Today, quietude reigned
in solitary gift wrapping, this one
from grandpa and grandma,
these will be from Santa and/or Mrs. Claus,
and even the elves helped to gift.

~*~

It was only twelve days ago from the
loss of warm currents
streaming through lines
when the ice storms cracked limbs
and took life lines away;
when the first two days were layered with hope
with battery powered radios saying
to check the website for updates…

a Get Real comment escaped chapped lips
accompanied by some powerful expletives,
once or twice,
but He listened, anyway. He probably even
understood. After all,
He had given up so much more.

~*~

It was some 144 hours with promises in-between
which might have scattered lesser strains,
while we watched the thermometer drop,
when some out-of-state southerners arrived
[who had lived through worse…
for after all, it was only 38 degrees indoors]
before power was restored.  It was as if
on the seventh day, there was light.
An early Christmas.

But the southern boys did mention
that it was a little nippy outside.

I haven’t yet mentioned the number of times
we thanked those boys from
the south. Even if they hadn’t worked
our streets, we stopped when we saw
out-of-state trucks...

Thank you!

~*~

From another window, now, today, these weary eyes
espy stark reminders of overwhelmed trees.
Even our scampering, pampered squirrels
have relocated, such as their nests indicate,
as if they know that
our thirty-plus-foot grandeur
just outside my west window
will not again see spring,
glorious in her silky green.

~*~

I won’t cry. I won’t cry.
It’s only a tree…
a living, gift giving reflection of others’ past lives.
The bitter icy pain known only for long moments
was not near enough for such a reaction,
even if my sensitivities speak differently.

We were fortunate, even more
than some. Six days of bitter cold was not
as bitter as some know daily, even now.

We were not flooded out.
We did not undergo a conflagration.
We did not lose anything in an earthquake.
There was no hurricane.
We were, ultimately,
most fortunate.

And when the lights returned
it felt like Christmas.

In our neck of the woods, it seems this
will be a white Christmas this year.
Remember to bring the joy of your fortune
to those who may have less.

A sidenote: Sporadic power was almost immediately restored to some of our neighbors within eyesight…we were glad that their children were warm; we were grateful that our elderly neighbors within our area found lodging; family and friends came together; we were grateful that our own grandchildren and families were not without power over 12 hours in time.  We happen to live in an all-electric area. Go figure. We stayed where we were, in our own home, to help keep an eye on the neighborhood, to care for our dog, for there was no room at the inns, literally. And by today’s codes, no barns were available, either. A generator kept us as safe as safe could be. It was a long moment that I doubt we will forget, and truthfully, am glad that I went through it, because indeed, it brought me closer to my own writings. Our elderly dog Abby learned to enjoy being blanketed with love...and quilts.

Merry Christmas, Everyone!

38 degrees inside your home?!? Oh, the chill of it all!
At least you were able to illume it with your radiant Light, dear Sun!!!

Karilea, I cannot adequately express the extent to which I have been affected by your trying experience, your grace of acceptance, your appreciation of what you do have, your compassion for others, and your Christmas blessings of good will.

With love & CHRIST-mas Light,

Linda

Yes mam you are a survivor. With that attitude any Christmas is Merry! Peace.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

It's quite an adventure, especially for children ... ice storms, tornados, snow storms ... whatever the cause, once the power is lost, we're left to fend for ourselves, while trying to help those less fortunate. Pulling together not only means helping friends and family, but even stretches all the way out of province/state or even country, to lend that helping hand ... over the years, Ontario has been blessed with that helping hand from Michigan Hydro as well as New York and we've always jumped at the chance to return the favor.

gosh, this brings back memories of hurricane Ivan back in September 2004...how there were power trucks from as far off as New York coming to help us...they rolled in here in convoys like they were ready for battle!

I understood why they have basements in Kansas and now I understand why they have fireplaces

Merry Christmas mama K, hope you are all staying warm and cozy

Dear Karilea, I am impressed by your story here.
Such a long time, it truly was like diving into a long gone past.

But how beautiful is your gratitude!

Conscious Christmas feeling, no doubt.

Love and warm hugs.

Sister K, my warm thoughts were with you during and after that storm. I'm afraid Mother Nature is finally taking revenge for a long list of our miscreant behaviors. May the next Year be more gentle to you and yours.
hugs, Kacy

I hearken back to the year of '96

the great blizzard.

I can sympathize with you here... i have seen my share of blizzards, hurricanes, and fires, as well as the people who fixed everything up for us when we needed their help. God bless them.... for all eternity...
