A boisterous blue jay calls his own name from atop a scraggy pine, while a lone woodpecker hammers endlessly on a once-magnificent tree, his powerful chisel-beak cushioned by a spongy protective head bone, much as the moss green pathway undulating before me muffles the sound of my trespassing feet. Each remains oblivious to my presence. A raucous raven hops nearby menacingly, seeking an opportune moment to steal from my backpack left leaning against a decaying oak log. A chattering squirrel cries foul play, but the trickster pays no heed. In an instant, he descends upon the open pack, seizes a bright red foil wrapped granola bar, then quickly exits with his ill-gotten booty. I am at once both amused and annoyed (Poe-etic justice?) and vow to better guard my survival snacks on my next wild side walk. |

Well, you made his day! You beautifully display here the harmony of nature. Enjoyed this wild side walk greatly. Love, margherita ![]() |

Very amusing, enjoyed. I had a similar experience once. I had hidden Easter eggs in the back yard for the kids. They were plastic and some were half clear plastic. I watched a crow fly down, peck open the egg and fly away with a little gold colored necklace. Crows are so smart. Ida |

This reminds me of my walks when I used to live at the Grand Canyon... Thanks for taking me back there, Kacy... ![]() "When the power of love overcomes the love |

"I am at once both amused and annoyed (Poe-etic justice?) and vow to better guard my survival snacks on my next wild side walk." Perfect summation, Kacy! You make me want to put on a pack myself with those descriptons that took me hiking with you! ![]() |
