Memory Bank A well-dressed and sprightly old man of ninety-two Was taken to the old people’s home today, He was no longer able to take care of himself, As his wife of seventy years had just passed away. After waiting quite patiently at the nursing home, He was finally told that his room was now ready, He smiled his approval and rose from his seat, Tho’ slightly stooped over his steps were quite steady. The nurse took him down the hall to his room Explaining as she went just what he would find, Providing him with a visual description to come, For this proud old gentleman was legally blind. I love it, he exclaimed with such great enthusiasm But you haven’t seen it yet, you may change your stance, That doesn’t have anything to do with it, he replied, Happiness is something that you decide in advance. Whether I like the room or not doesn’t depend on how The furniture is arranged, for that is not the problem at stake, I have already decided that I would love it for sure, It’s a decision I decide every morn when I wake. Each morning I always make one of two choices To either stay in bed recounting my problems anew, With those parts of my body that no longer work, Or get out of bed & be thankful for those parts that do. Each day is a gift and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day & all my memories within, For at this time in my life as I approach my twilight years, My memory is like a bank account, I take out what I put in. So my advice to you all is deposit as much as you can, Of all your happy memories in your memory bank, In the twilight years of our lives that’s all we have left, Thank you nurse for helping to add to my memory bank. -------------------------------- Free your heart from hatred, Free your mind from worries if you can, Live simply, give more, expect less, And you’ll find that you're a much happier man. |

The man in this poem is very wise in that he focuses on the positive and not the negative. |
