THE DEBUTANTE’S BALL The master of ceremonies walked out on the stage, He had that air of, I’ve done this before, It was easy to see he was well in command And with a smile he gazed round the floor. Ladies and gentlemen, his introduction began, And a quiet hush fell over the hall, We are gathered tonight for the years social event, Our town’s famous debutante’s ball. There are fifteen couples you are waiting to see Who will be presented to our popular Mayor, With his good lady beside him, I’m sure they’ll be pleased With you all, this great night to share. While back in the wings the young couples stood tense Waiting for the band to give them their cue, The girls all dressed in their lovely white gowns, The boys in bow ties and suits of royal blue. How different they looked just six weeks ago When they started practice for this famous event, They came in T shirts, jumpers and jeans, But with eagerness that made the teacher content. As each week slipped away, the excitement it grew, Till at last the great night had arrived, The teacher had been strict on both the girls & the boys, And now each one was quite glad they’d survived. The band started up with a roll from the drums, The first couple stepped out from the wings, Then the violin’s cut in at the couple’s first step, Music as sweet as when the nightingale sings. Now they had reached the front of the stage, They poised before descending the stairs, On the dance floor waited the mayor and his wife While the other debs stood waiting in pairs. Yesterday’s children had now come of age, It was a fact that could not be denied, Their parents each brushed a tear from their eye As their hearts swelled up with great pride. As the couple descended with elegance and poise, Their names to the crowd were relayed, Then standing in front of the mayor and his wife A beautiful curtsy they made. Moving then to take up their place on the floor While the next couple moved into their place, The boy with a confident carriage of head, The girl with a shy, sweet smile on her face. As each couple presented themselves in their turn, Each received a great round of applause, For the debutante’s ball was a charitable event And it was run for a very good cause. When the last couple stepped out from the wings An excited murmur ran right round the hall, For there on the stage was a vision in white, The most beautiful deb of them all. By her side was a youth, handsome and strong With a quality that you seldom will meet, With this beautiful girl, a lovely picture they made, One that would quicken the oldest heartbeat. In perfect step to the music, they descended the stairs Till they stood smiling in front of the Mayor, Then with grace &with charm their curtsy they made, A fact of which the whole crowd seemed aware. Now it was time for the debutante’s waltz, They had all trained so hard for this dance, To mothers and fathers and onlookers alike, Perfection could be seen at a glance. When came the time for Auld Lang Syne to be played You could still see the trace of a tear, With many a heart still bursting with pride To repeat itself over next year |

You write with such detail. It was almost as if I too were at the Ball. |
