Pampas Grass When first you took hold in our garden, a hollow space filled. Between rock and hard-packed clay, you thrived through September. Silky clouds over emerald stalks put on a really good show. We thought you to be harmless as a plumed duster; you were akin to a feather star: a million mouths feeding. Your clump spread in height and girth. Roots slithered deep to suck rain, and the sprinklers stopped sprinkling. All that was soft and fragile – gone, back to dirt, beneath your skirt. Now you’ve spilled into the walkway, blocked the window’s light. Sharp reeds branch to sliver hands as we brush past, sending us scurrying for ointments. You are nasty to the marrow; the vane of a burning arrow. You forget you are an ornament. [This message has been edited by Corinne (09-24-2007 09:36 PM).] |

Reminds me of the beautiful front yard tree whose roots literally sent the s**t back up our toilet one day.. and couldn't help chuckling reading 'Pompous Ass' the first time over. I also like the snide in the last sentence very much, irony.. Keep gardening Pops |

Arctic Wind, Ida and Pops -- thank you for weighing in on this one! The pompas (gr)ass is a metaphor as Pops picked up (thanks Pops!). ![]() Corinne |

Oh, but scrolling backwards and finding this is such a treat! Grinning at your Pampas/pompous metaphor. I've seen people plant this, as well as ivy, kudzu and various other prolific invasives, then try everything in their arsenal to destroy it years later. Great write, Corinne, glad I found it! |

I missed this, dear one... in our clime some bindweed grows a flower-like kin to glory for morning is its trumpet's glow but its keep is another story... like pompas pampas it grows strong a vine that creeps all over a beauteous sight in eyes, yet wrong one would wish it clover... ![]() weeds are a daring flower... sometimes their beauty is its own escape... Happy New Year! |
