It wasn’t enough
Was it . . .
In the end

All those honors
Parades men and women
Children waving flags
Couldn’t fill the vacuum
Yet in the whole

Life goes on
After the gaudy bands
Have all gone home
And when on leaving
Still no one’s there

To hold one’s hand
And heart that is
The quiet wealth of love

There’s only then
Despair

Dear John,

You have a way with words or without words to touch one's heart. This poem made me cry.

A heart tortured by love, blood, hatred and death, and perhaps in a wounded body. After all the sound of loudness, being alone in silence was the time for a loud crying of soul.
