A politician dies: immediately, automatically,
his face usurps the news,
a state funeral is held, flags fly, guns are fired
and we as a society must mourn his death.
Yet did he not spend his power years
taking from the poor to give to the rich?
Did he not fail to do
what he promised at election time?
Did he not use his power
to feather his own nest?

A homeless person goes to sleep
beside a dumpster and never wakes up
as lack of food, shelter and love
take their toll especially in Winter.
Another Jane Doe – her body is cremated,
and the costs passed on
to the rest of society “at large.”

So, a cheat and a liar
is honoured and mourned
because his name is known
while tens of thousands, unknown
(that would be us and our families
and those who “fall through the cracks”)
die after carrying the life-long load
and hardly a tear is shed,
hardly a word spoken.

Yes, it remains true, all are created equal:
are some more equal than others, then?

Without discernment, without understanding,
without justice and without love:
how can humanity ever hope
to arrive at compassion?

Superb 'social-impact'/-conscience work!
[as I have come to expect whenever
I have a chance to 'read' this
   author!]

From among the possible choices of what I have read from
this poet, I believe I am most fond of this particular 'write'!]

much, MUCH applause!!

Windwalker,

Though wealth and power does not guarantee wickedness, nor poverty righteousness, I think that  these kinds of misjudgments and paradoxes are real.  The first shall be last and the last shall be first.  Think of Lazarus and Dives in Jesus' parable.  Very thought provoking poem.

Alas...money and power are glorified and those that have not are demonized..
Individually we can do our best to understand the truth and act accordenly...James
