It was a time When death was too common To be hidden from children When alter boys were not destroyed However tender might be their age By smoke that masked the smell For after all It wasn’t they who were Being laid out on silk In severed flowers For those in pews to see How near to each By fate or chance That silent hatch to eternity Though one not want The door . |
