When I sing just right my voice vibrates across the tender surface of my lips It’s just something that happens when the notes come from inside Creates ticklin’ sensations like a little girl swing, singin’ hymns to the trees and old tunes to the breezes The Deep sways up, makin’ me feel rooted, part of the soil, yet part of the sky A limbo region of belonging When my feet don’t touch the ground, sound bounces off everything from tin roofs to old oaks, seasoning my songs, pollinating my pitch Giving me a thick accent—an aria of damnable drawl Til I belt out the blues Then it rains It’s the world tryin’ to drown me out, and I’m a no-show at the Opry That’s when things start to wiggle down at the Copper Head I’m a stranger to myself there Darker, and more delirious in the heat of all that biz Men drinkin’ fiz, siftin’ out the water through their teeth They don’t have any dreams, so I just paint vibes for them then send them on home to their wives who could care less about a cocktail dress or a tease They could sing better in their sleep than me But they can’t remember the words when awake, and nothing quakes their lips anymore In tribute to the black songstresses of the south. |

Reg, And a fine tribute it is. Took me all kinds of places even though I know nothin' 'bout fiz. You could take me there any time. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, |

Dear Regina Your listening ear hears much deeper than any crowded smoke-filled room could. That is why your voice is so clear. |

Absolutely wonderful! You took me right out of this cubicle and into dim lights and low notes that are felt as well as heard. *S* |

All I can say is, WOW. And then a quiet wow for afters. Wonderful. Your use of language to make me feel essence of the song-masterful. Nan (Pilgrim variety) |
