City In The Sea
(Nan Madol)

The South Pacific's sea mists hide
An ancient city, built with pride,
By people who remain unknown,
But had a way with coral and stone.
For man-made islets dot the sea.
We wonder how they came to be.
Shallow channels lead you to
The ruins, but there is no clue
To who they were and where they went.
We don't know what these buildings meant.

Some were used for sacred rites.
One of the strangest of the sights,
Is basalt columns, tall and strong.
Where did they come from and how long
Did it take them to cultivate
A city that must have been great?
It is a mystery to all.
There's no one now who has recall
Of any facts related to
This fascinating place we view!
Nan Madol is said to be
Name of this city in the sea!

Dear Joyce:  Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. It fascinated me to read about it and the almost unknown people who built it.

Verbena:

Nan Madol was a real city in the south Pacific Ocean many years ago. Not a lot is known about the people who created it, but I understand there is a movement right now to make it a tourist attraction for some cruise lines. There is quite a bit of information about it on the Internet.

You took me on a poetic journey with this one, and I had never heard of it either, so had to research it.  Thanks for the lesson and the lovely poem.
