Vow of Silence

A vow of silence
even if barricaded behind
Monastery or Convent walls
…would appear unattainable.

How can such quiet exist,
when the mind is never still?
It runs rampant
…like a fast train to nowhere,
or a ball bouncing constantly
in a tunnel of the past,
present and future.
It has enticed, captured
…and absorbed
so many hopes and dreams,
nightmares and memories
that they never fade
…nor cease to be heard.

Where is the silence,
the still ~ the calm?
A vow of silence,
even behind the walls of holiness
…would appear unattainable.

Actually Spirit, I can go to a place where I obtain total silence finally.  It took me years to finally be able to "still myself" enough to get there, but now that I have it, I escape there quite often as it is a wonderful place.  Loved your poem.

I can somewhat but cannot maintain it for a beneficial period of time. Outside interference often intrudes.  Never managed to get a handle on meditation either, not for lack of trying though.

Thanks for reading

Dinah:

I loved this poem and would like to be able to reach that "island of quiet" in this busy world. Not to be for me apparently!

Yes it is a hard place to visit at will but sometimes the silence is more than I can bear, and I need to find sound.  Love, Joyce

You know.  This opened my eyes.  One never does hear silence anymore.  There's always some whir if machinery or chatter of people.  There's absolutely no time to lay at rest, listening to the sounds of nature.  I've vowed to escape the bonds of humanity and just... enjoy nature.  Thank you for this.  Thank you.

This reminds me of my own mind...It never wants to slow down for a minute, much less longer to mediate.

Thank you for sharing this
