Mourning Doves

The light had just began to flow
Across the eastern mountain wall,
When from the field where birches grow,
The mourning doves began to call.
I wonder why they sound so sad?
They utter such a grieving note.
The other birds sound very glad,
When songs pour from each feathered throat.

Perhaps the females call this way
Because they've brooded through the night
Upon their clutch; with break of day
They're eager for refreshing flight.
They beg the males to take their place
At guarding white eggs in the nest.
Of course this may not be the case,
But it's the theory I like best!

Dear Betty Lou,
I enjoyed reading your beautiful poem, it shows your great sensitivity as you capture the sad tone in the doves' "talk".
Your conclusions are lovely.

Love,
Margherita

Yep, I would recognize your writing without a name, too. All you would have to do is to describe something and I would say, "aha!"

fromme2u:  I love the song of the mourning dove and we have a lot of them normally, however, with this long winter we are having, they haven't arrived yet this year.
Thanks for reading!

Dear Betty Lou

A lovely poem about 'Mourning Doves' and I like your theory too.......it is about time those males took over the nesting whilst the females took a break!
