The Invasion The swallows have returned again And brought some reinforcements, A sea of birds attacking me With streams of mud in torrents. Their little nests are made with love And glued fast to survive. With broom I try to chase a pair Before some more arrive. They're building everwhere they see A niche on which to hitch; Along the porch, upon the eaves, To them I am a witch Because I won't allow them to Build homes above my door. They bring their straw and mud to glue, I tear it down once more. I must be ever vigilant Before the nests are filled. I'm not the fiend they think I am. No hatchlings will be killed. We have this squabble every spring, A row I dare not lose Or I'll be trapped by their intent To build where ere they choose. Forgive me please, I've no more time To sit and play with words. I must take up my broom and wage "The Battle of The Birds". By: Joyce 5/29/08 |

Joyce, This is wonderful! I bet they have their eyes on you too! Maybe you could send some of those mosquito eaters my way! I love this poem. Alison |

Dear Joyce: I loved this poem, especially because we are fighting the same battle! The swallows are determined to build in our carport and you know what that does to your cars!!! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Don't get me wrong Alison, I do like my swallows. I just don't want to live with them over my head. They keep my yard free of mosquitos. Joyce |

While I love the poem itself, I can not help but be reminded of the other animals I've had to 'keep from my doorsteps' that people have abandoned along the way ![]() Birds are only wild animals trying to reclaim what was once theirs...It's the previously sheltered ones that are 'released into the wild' that tugs at my heart strings. Anyways, good poem ![]() BWA~ ~Formerly known as Broken Winged Angel~ |

Broken Winged Angel, I have had that same problem. Dumped off dogs and cats. I do my best for them and some I keep and the rest I either find homes for or take to the pet shelter. These birds although I love them I try to nudge a little further down the eaves or into the trees or another building where they would be welcome. I just cannot have them over my head at the door. Thanks for reading.Joyce |

Dear Joyce I love your sense of humour! A great poem! We have to be careful here in Australia with out magpies! Once they nest in trees they wage war on whoever is unfortunate enough to walk in their 'territory'. They can do some nasty damage if they hit target. Love Elizabeth xo |

Thank you Elizabeth. That must be why we call mischievous people, "Magpies" I am unfamiliar with them. Thanks for reading. Love, Joyce |
