Got out of bed, splashed some water on my face. Coffee was on, a cracked cup next to the pot. A little sugar, a little cream and a quick swish with the spoon. Looked at the door, oh Lord, I ain't ready for this day. went out and sat in the old broken seat next to the door, gazed around the junk strewn yard, but couldn't see her. Panic set in, did she finally leave me, did she go away. I'd crawl back into that bottle if she did. Just then she came around the hogan, and my world lit up, long black hair blowing in the morning breeze. Flashing eyes to let me know, the anger plain on her face, this cannot go on, I can hear the words already. There are things to fix around here, new things to build, that is if you'd stay sober long enough. We could use the money you spend on whiskey, there are other things needed besides getting drunk. She walked right past me, didn't say a word, didn't have to, I said them enough to myself. Never one to complain though, just go about her daily tasks, keeping busy so as not to dwell upon her pain. I think it's time, no putting it off for another day, go find my tools and get busy. So I went inside, found the half full bottle, then went back out and threw it as far as I could. I could hear it break when it hit the rocks, down in the bottom of the creek. I stood there looking, and she came out near me, no words, just a faint smile before she turned away. Went back to her chores, but with a slight bounce in her walk, the bounce that said this will be a special night. And so it went, those seventeen years ago, and her hair is still long and black. Her eyes are softer now, but she always finds a way, without words, tonight will be something to remember. Cheechako |

Thank you for your comments. Even though it is just a story, it is a reflection of real life on the reservation. This kind of thing happens a lot more than the general public hears about. But you have good insight if you can see the irony of what has happened to this man. After years and years of alcohol abuse he decided that it was time to respond to his mates patience and endurance. It doesn't happen all that often but when it does, what a joyous occasion. A time of celebration and praise to what ever Supreme Being they believe in. How easy it is to lose those beliefs and wander in an alcohol induced haze. It almost happened to me, although not because of alcohol or drugs, and I thank Usen for the help I recieved to overvome those problems. Cheechako |
