Daddy's Colors

Daddy, want to play a game?
Let’s talk about the colors I’ve learned
I’ll paint you a picture of what you’ve taught me
All of the things you say that I’ve earned

Clear is the color of softly falling rain
Kissing our skin as we danced beneath the sky
Clear is the color of shattered beer bottles
Clear is the color that stained my face when I’d cry

Blue is the color of the lake we loved
Fishing late into summer nights
Blue is the color of the bruises you gave me
When I made you angry in those fights

Black is the color of a midnight sky
You’d point out stars and planets
Black is the color of the ring around Jake's neck
When you wrapped skin in your hands to choke him

Silver is the color of the ring you gave me
Said it was your dad’s and handed it over with pride
Silver is the color of the knife you lunged at me with
And the color of the blade I now hide

Red is the color of the roses you gave Mom
Each year for Mother’s Day
Red is the color of drops of blood
That I force to make the pain go away

White is the color of a wintry snow
Of the snow forts we slaved over to make
White is the color of cold court house walls
Restraining orders for protection’s sake

Pink is the color of New Jersey sunsets
We gazed at the painted sky, a family of four
Pink is the color of certain pills
Counted out because I couldn’t take it anymore

Look at all of these colors Daddy
These lessons you’ve shown me over time
Sometimes I really hate you
But don’t worry, I’ll be just fine

I have nothing to say. Hang in there.

Crying over here. I can't imagine what you and your little brother have all been through, but I know it's been torture to you. This is such an amazing poem, keep writing and stay strong. I'll always be here for the both of you and don't ever forget that you are loved.

This is such a spectacular poem yet horribly sad. Keep hanging in there and always remember that people car e for you.

Very well done
