The old men sit behind their cluttered desks
And move their armies on their pristine maps
While young men die and spill their crimson blood
And never know, or ask, the reason why.
The old men talk in muffled, measured tones
And calculate what price they are prepared
To pay to gain one mile, one yard of land.
For young and old it's always been the same,
The only thing that changes are the names;
And faces are forgotten as each page
Of history records the details and
The facts but lets the human stories fade.
Must old men with their brandy soddened breaths
Continue sending young men to their deaths?

Yes, because they are only old men because when they were young men some old men sent their young peers to their deaths to defend both young and old.

Nice contemporary sonnet though.

The sad, but cold hard truth is, The old men are usually the survivors, the smartest or the luckiest of the battle weary.

Hopefully they learned something in the years of service to help the young survive more than those of their past warrior brotheren..

The more we learn how to protect ourselfs, the less we have to die for that protection.

Nice write.
