I gave up trying to write free verse
but I had to do something.

So I got the mixer out,
four to one sand and cement,
a splash of plasticiser
then the appetiser - leaning on a spade
with a rolled cigarette
just waiting for the mix.

Four courses on a concrete base,
two bricks wide, with a row of headers
and a two brick pillar at each end.
Ten feet long, but not straight,
it couldn’t be straight,
it had to be curved - free style.

I built a wall
Then read it.

Thanks for the replies.

Karen,

Believe it or not I actually did build a wall in the garden yesterday. I’ve taken a couple of days off from the grind of the office, swapping my suit, shirt and tie for my work jeans and boots and doing some proper work for a change.

I miss getting my hands dirty I guess, plus there’s a real sense of satisfaction when, while leaning on a spade, you can actually see the tangible results of your labour. I’m planting potatoes today - I’ve got a yearning for the Good Life.

I love the way you bring your labors together. *S* And if your potato crop is as tasty as your poems, you'll be feasting. *S*

Recommend a splash of fairy liquid in the mix...hehehe.
Pretty good with a shovel myself if you need a lift with your spuds!!
