when lapwings cry |

When lapwings cry ‘peewit’ and birch buds are poised to open, it will be spring in the highlands. Golden grasses turn green, the air tastes pure and clean. But along the Syrian flyway the lovely Sociable Lapwings are critically endangered, yet hunters shoot them from the skies to cater to a ‘gourmet’ palate. We all eat the chain of life. But why is it some don’t understand eliminating one link weakens the whole? |

Awe, it's so sad when people kill animals, especially if they are about to be extincted! I LOVE animals, I believe they should be treated equally! And they are so innocent and cute ARCTIC WIND |

Dear Kacy, you never spoke truer words. It is deeply ingrained in some people the desire to hunt and kill, sad though it is. Much enjoyed dear Lady. Love. Lindsay |

In U.S. News and World Report's special "Mysteries of Science" edition, there's an article that gives great credence to the argument that species of animals (ahem--which means US) evolve (adapt?) by such delicate triggers of even the quality of oxygen. I thought of you, dear kacy, our forever defender of Gaia. You are pretty special m'lovely. lapwings, eh? Yanno? I'd never heard of 'em before, but I'll go looking for 'em in my dreams now. thank you lovie. |

Ser, lapwings are cool birds. They really do cry a 'peewit' call that is distinctive. Though I don't recall every encountering one, I once listened to an Audubon tape with lapwings crying out this sound. Thanks all, for reading. Thanks for the link, Bobby. Yes, there are some havens where this bird still resides, but sadly, the ME flyways of migration fail to protect them. Current Birdlife International programs seek to change this scenario with new hunting regulations. |

Thank you Kacy, for your wonderful support for our furred/feathered/scaled/etc friends. When the human race rises to the level of civilisation of animals, that is when most will understand. Love your poem too. Owl |

Kacy i have seen giant flocks of lapwings and also their strange but exhilerating display flights where they call and dive and twist through the air. Very sad they are hunted where you are, well done for bringing it to attention..thank you.. Goldenrose. Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. Thanks for visiting the lapwings, Diana! I know how much you love birds and other critters in general. Phil, the area where they are still being hunted is in the ME flyway zone, Syria being just one country in the flyway. It's my understanding the lapwing in the British Isles is still in good shape, though they are very different lapwing than the endangered ME bird. Thanks for reading, Phil. |
