Two tours were spent on satellite minutes
listening to CNN and planning a rescue.
"Yesterday, men were cut and slung
in pieces from an overpass. We didn't stop."
His words squirm like maggots fleshing bone.
Nothing I say mends him.
On Bill O'Reilly they shoe-flog Saddam
and I map escape routes in cold eggs.

Two tours were spent on stamps and razors,
glued to Fox News and planning a rescue.
"Last night I dreamed I flew over Baghdad
in the arms of an Angel."
The words strained in my ear, his faith on a tether.
Nothing I say saves him.
On Anderson Cooper they protest funerals
and I map escape routes in cold soup.

Two tours were spent on condolences and flowers,
On BBC they roll coffins from planes.
"We tried but couldn't get him out,
I watched him burn!"
His words erupt in a voice too guilty for acquittal.
Nothing I say redeems him.
Jim Lehrer scrolls the names of wrecked Marines
and I map escape routes in cold coffee.

I turn off the volume of war, make hot chocolate
and sip through Iraqi postcards.
"The kids here are amazing Dad, this is why we're here."
And there in a photo of a Marine with three smiling boys,
I see escape routes in their eyes.

This packed a punch, and rightfully so.  I am sure there are has been many a poem written in a similar train of thought.  I hope they all get the heck out of there!

This hit me hard.  It is one of the most powerful poems that I have read on this site.  It is a keeper - so may I? May I keep this one?

You blew me away enough that I need to go and just be quiet.

I have shared this with a friend of mine.  His son is also in Iraq.

My friend said, "wow."

And, I thank you on his behalf and on the behalf of all parents who have children in Iraq, Afganistan and other places far from home.

This is almost disturbing, very deep and well thought out.

Well done.

Tracey.

I thought about your poem last night, re-read it, then dug out the poetry book I had bought in support of NPR.  I thought you may enjoy listening to this author.

I wish this poetry did not have to be written.  I am just so grateful for them, and may God speed them all home soon.

Words fail me, friend. Stunning work that cut to the bone. I won't ever forget this piece.

this just tears my heart to pieces...
two of mine are now in the Air Force, one for just over a year, one leaving me next Monday night. I couldn't be more proud...

Tears were welling in my eyes as I was reading this solar-plexus grabbing write ~
but when I got to this line ~ ""The kids here are amazing Dad, this is why we're here." ~ the tears slid freely down my cheeks and I got a big lump in my throat.

God bless your son, you ~ and all those in harm's way,

Love, Light, and world peace,
EA

Your son has inherited your caring, giving  spirit.  You have every reason to be proud of him and vise-versa.  This piece evoked the most tender and strongest emotions.  It's a keeper, for sure.  Thank you for sharing your inner most feelings with us.

God bless,
