From high atop the crystal spire An angel pondered why All men were bound to strive in grief Forever doomed to die. God had barred divine from men, She knew this most unjust That those who suffered for their love Would end their days as dust. As mortal woman she would be, She left heaven behind, A human lover she would take And deify mankind. The one she sought lay in his sleep, In youth yet not unscarred, She came to him and they entwined Under a lover's star. But as she strove to soar homeward Their weight she could not bear, For she had bound herself unto The bitter mortal share. There would be no forever more For men's nor angel's years, For both had cast themselves into The endless stream of tears. Never sigh for a better world, it's already composed, played and told. |
