Unconditional acceptance is risky, I find... it's like refusing to acknowledge one's wrongs, as opposed to simply accepting them or learning to understand them. I think love is very conditional, which is why it takes time for it to develop. If love were really unconditional, why not be in love with everyone? |

LOVE All our combined efforts here could never exhaust the infinite definitions of love. For that is what true love is like. It is beyond the ken of mortal man to define love. It is equally beyond mans ability to deny love. One never chooses love; love chooses you. I have always mulled over the question of love. I have come to the conclusion that it is very rare that we ever really know true love. As someone said, Corinthians has probably the most accurate description of what love should be. However, the average person talks about love all the time without really ever feeling anything close to what is defined in Corinthians. I myself thought I knew what love is until I first laid eyes on my eldest son when he was born. That very moment transformed me as a person, and changed all my beliefs about love. It is unconditional, and this is not a cliche. It truly is. You would literally give your very life in defense of one who you truly love. You are prepared to forgive, wipe the slate clean and start all over; over and over again. When you love someone, there are no parameters. Love simply is. When all is said and done, love cannot be truly defined. It can only be felt. You cannot tell someone about it. they would never understand. I pity the man or woman who has never felt the sheer joy (and pain) of love. Without love, nothing else matters. |

I maintain that love is very conditional. I don't see how everyone is so quick to say that it's unconditional... there are reasons, "conditions" under which you learn to love somebody. That's why it takes time to develop, and that's what makes it so special. If love were unconditional, then it wouldn't mean very much to be "loved," would it? Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world. |

Unconditional, LP, doesn't refer to the process of falling in love, but rather to the state of love. If you only love someone because they have blonde hair and would stop loving them if they dyed it, that is a condition. If you only love someone because they open doors for you and show you respect, that is a condition. If you only love someone because they love you, that is a condition. Unconditional love means that no matter what the other person does, you will continue to love them. Between a man and a woman, it is a very rare love. Between a mother and her child, it is much more common, I think. Not A Common Thing |

I think Ron is right, although true love between a man and a woman is possible and possibly more common then we might believe. Loving someone and being able to live with them may not be the same thing. As hard as it is for me to admit....I still love my ex-husband. I could not live with what was happening in the house and things are better the way they are now. I have not stopped loving him and I am not sure if I ever will. What I do know is....as he is now...he could never be a part of my life again. If he changes and concerns himself with the happiness of others before himself and proves this change of heart....he has a chance. A mother's love for her child is unconditional. Until you have a child of your own JP, you may not be able to undertsand this. Marilyn. |

I guess to answer LP's comments, I can only say that I've always felt there is a difference in meaning between FALLING IN LOVE, BEING IN LOVE, and LOVE, as a separate stand-alone essential concept of Life. I've fallen and been in love many many times. So it's easy for me to love Humanity unconditionally, yet I know I've always set some conditional parameters within my personal relationships. Perhaps that's why I am without a mate, but am close to my teenage daughter, whom I truly love unconditionally? It's a sticky area for most, but I guess my bizarre mind doesn't interpret all these definitions of love as being in conflict with how I approach life from day-to-day. Impossible to put it into one sentence. Love is the good feeling you look for because its convenient for yourself, nothing more. A love relationship is mostly mutal respect, kindness, passion and counsel (for some), thats the only thing we're not selfish about. Originally, I just think love was the mere sex drive of apes, but since we became more intelligent, (and at the same time more confused) we invented love. |

Aenimal, Quoting Dostoevsky to disparage the concept of love? You should know better than that. Dostoevsky's entire body of work is a powerful attestation to the need for God and love in life, and what dire results ensue when those things are forsaken by individuals or a society. I do grant you, that love is not without difficulty, which is what Fyodor is saying in "The Brothers K." But there's no doubt that Dostoevsky considered the alternative to real love a much more horrid thing than the trials which might accompany it. Read below for context ...(But then again, maybe I'm being too picky. This is "Feelings" and not "Philosophy 101". I just felt that you should probably choose someone other than Dostoevsky (one of my favorite authors) to make your point. If you're Scrooge why not quote him instead? lol. But, you know, he ended up changing his mind too. "Never be frightened at your own faint-heartedness in attaining love. Don't be frightened overmuch even at your evil actions. I am sorry I can say nothing more consoling to you, for love in action is a harsh and dreadful thing compared with love in dreams.
