Donald Ahrens in his meteorology textbook Meteorology Today describes a rainbow as “one of the most spectacular light shows observed on earth”. The traditional rainbow is sunlight spread out into its spectrum of colours as seen to the eye of the observer through water droplets (after rainfall). The “bow” part describes the fact that the rainbow is a group of nearly circular arcs of colour all having a common centre. A rainbow is an optical and meteorological happening that causes a nearly continuous spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth’ atmosphere. It takes the form of a multicoloured arc, with red on the outside and violet on the inside. Where traditionally the full sequence of colours is commonly sighted as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Sunlight is made up of the whole range of colours that the eye cannot always detect. This range of colours, when combined, normally looking white to the eye. © 2006 Christopher W Herbert (a New Zealand Poet) a poet who cares |
