It's one of those little things that drive one nuts, like why do they allow douche commercials on tv during the dinner hour...

I was using a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows ME. Then I broke the motherboard (don't ask) and had a backup computer, a Fujitsu Lifebook series with Windows 98. Then I bought an Inspiron 4100 with Windows Home XP to replace the broken one.

With the Fujitsu I had no problem but, with both Dells, when I respond to a post on PIP, instead of going back to the thread with my reply attached, I get a blank white screen. It goes to /main/postings.cgi and says DONE but the screen is blank. I need to backtrack to the thread and then hit Refresh to see my reply, a very irritating thing to do if replying to many threads. This is done on two different computers with two different operating systems, the only similarity being that they are both Dell.

Does Dell not like PIP?

Why don't you submit a Trouble Report, Mike, so I can see what your settings look like? There was a very similar question in the Bugs forum recently and I still haven't found out what's happening. With more instances available, maybe a pattern will surface.

ok will do. Another thing that goes along with it is that, on the Dells, I do not get flashing lights signifying activity alongside the site names on the Main Forums list....with Fujitsu I do.

How did we ever defeat the Japanese, anyway??

The flashing lights are analogous to the red and yellow folders inside the forum, Mike. Both depend on the same cookies. Any problems with the folders?

Ron, I noticed this post earlier today, and when I made a post just now, I noticed something new while it was posting and heading back to the main screen ... you now flash a "Stuck? Click here to continue if your browser .... "

Was that a fix for this problem Michael mentioned? Just curious.

(and Michael ... your mind could never be blank my friend, it's filled with too many wonderful stories)

It's not a fix so much as a work around.

There wasn't anything in Michael's Trouble Report to suggest the cause of the problem, other than a fairly new browser. New enough that I've never tested our software with it. This patch should give me some breathing room until I can investigate more deeply.

Interesting....when I click on the "click here..." message I go to a screen which gives me a "Forbidden....not authorized to view this page" message. That's not nice!!!

Anyway, it wouldn't matter because I DO get forwarded....it's just to a blank screen.

Michael, when you post a New topic (as opposed to a Reply), does it take you back to the forum? Or do you get a blank page there, too?

When you click on the link and get Forbidden message, what does the URL in your Location bar look like?

tell you in a second...I'll try it here.

No, when I post a new poem, it goes back fine to where it should with no blank page...

ok I tried it. I got the forbidden message with the web url reading....
/main/

Also, upon editing this reply, I also went to a blank screen when finished.

Which browser are you using?

I don’t know if this is related but IE6 has the ability to block cookies on a per site basis, it’s part of the Privacy section in Internet tools.

Here are a couple of links:

Ron, I am still getting the blank screen. And the new little 'click here if you're stuck' tells me I am not authorised too.
Oh well, I'm used to it now and just hit the back button and then refresh.

for what it's worth - was talking to sys admin guy here at work today regarding an issue with our own server access - seems that when i had previously uploaded IE6, there was no problem - but when i downloaded the security patches, it set off all sorts of alarms and refused me access.

for me, jumping back to IE5.5 seemed to work fine.

I had IE5 on the other Dell and the problem was the same....this one is IE6 - with patches

I just did a privacy report on PIP and IE reports that no cookies for the site were blocked or restricted....

It's not a cookie issue, but it is a browser problem.

When you click on a link (like the "Reply" icon), your browser must tell the server where it wants to go and it "should" tell the server where it is coming from. The latter is called the HTTP_REFERER because it's the page doing the referring. It's typically used to find out who is linking to us and how new people are finding the site (especially search engines).

If you can stretch your memory cells back a few years, one of the complaints we had about the UBB software was that replying always took us back to the first page of a multi-page thread. For most flora, that's not a big issue because they don't have that many multi-page threads.

I solved the problem by removing the hard-coded references to the thread and asking the browser where it was at - the HTTP_REFERER thingy. No matter what page you were on when you clicked the Reply icon, that's the page the software would return you. Two years later, with privacy becoming a real issue on the Internet, things are changing. Microsoft doesn't mind recording every DVD you play on your computer, but they don't want to tell me what page you were just on.

I suspect there's a security setting that can be altered in IE6, but I don't have a copy to play with. The programs have grown so large that downloading it isn't really an option on a normal dial-up line. I have to find the time to set up a new machine and install Win2000 (which comes with IE6) before I can do any real testing.

That's ok, Ron, as long as I know it's a valid issue and I wasn't losing my mind I will just keep going backup, backup, refresh (which I have much experience in

Any chance you can eliminate the thank you page  where it does go to so that it will go directly back to the topic. I don't really need to be thanked each time I make a reply, although it IS very polite

Er, you mean it should just sit on the Reply screen? How would you know when it was done?

The thank you isn't just polite, it's visual feedback that something has happened. Without it, people have a tendency to keep clicking the submit button.

If I can figure out how to do it, I'll make the auto refresh take most people back to the topic the same it does now, and make the clickable link point to the hard-coded topic page, like we had two years ago.

Ha, just got a link to this thread from Ron, showing I'm not the only one having the same trouble.
It started this morning april 19. I had installed Norton Security and thought this problem was related to the installation.

After some minor changes in my personal firewall, all went well.....once. After that it was the same problem again.

Don't know what's going on. Looks like somehow the 'way back' is blocked.

I'll just sit here and wait untill you guys have solved the problem, because I'm just plain stupid when IE's, browsers and all that stuff is involved.

See, and just now with the reply above, it took me back as normal. Am I going mad????

So, I'll try it again.

Titia
-------------------

Yes, I'm defenitly going mad, because this time it didn't take me back and I got this blanc page again. It's playing hide and seek.

But, as it is 1.00 AM overhere and as I have to get up at six to drive to a sheepmeeting 3 hours from here, I'll tuck myself in and start counting sheep Baah, Baah, Baah. I'm nuts, I'm certain now.

Computers are just like cars: they just have to work and take me where I want to go. LOL

------------------

Oh it heard me, because it was WORKING ALRIGHT NOW . Is it April 1st again????

------------------

It must be because it goes YES / NO / YES / NO
It's like a flickering lightbulb (is that a good word?). I'm quitting, hitting the sack, see you again in a few days, when I'm back.
