~Please don't laugh,...here's the problem: recently installed adobe 6 on my pc, uninstalled an old version, somehow now, my scanner isn't working. Says a TWAIN file is missing. Reinstalled scanner software as directed, still no TWAIN? file. Found this on the hp support site: (and I had to add spaces in the lines before 'DOS' to prevent the smilies from popping up)

"ISSUE: When attempting to access the scanner, the error "Cannot find or load TWAIN data source, TWAIN.DLL" appears.

SOLUTION: The SHARE.EXE program needs to be loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file before Windows starts. Other installation packages, like Microsoft (R) Office, also need SHARE.EXE to run.

1. Add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

C:\ DOS\SHARE.EXE

(Assuming DOS is located at C:\ DOS. If not, enter the correct path.)

Alternatively the following line can be added to the CONFIG.SYS:

INSTALL=C:\ DOS\SHARE.EXE

2. Once this line has been added and saved, restart the computer, and attempt to access the scanner again."

,......my question,...don't laugh, I'm horrible with these machines, is where and how do I add this line? rofl. Actually, this matter is quite serious, have major need for the scanner at this point, and deadlines to meet. Any help? will be greatly appreciated.

Alicia, this is just a guess, but I think you're looking at the wrong directions. What they're telling you to do is really, really old procedures, dating back to early versions of Windows. If you could provide a link to the HP page, and maybe tell us what version of Windows you're running, someone might be better able to help.

Does this happen when you use Adobe 6 as the interface to capture the source or does the scanner do zip whatever you use?

~Sitting here now trying again to figure this out, but with little to no knowledge on the subject I'm backed against the wall.

Ron, I realize now that I hadn't given enough information in the question, I'm still running win98, going to call HP, I'm just so lost at this point.

The message stating that the TWAIN data was not found, appears whether I try importing from or through adobe ps 6 or the other options,...doing a scanner test gives me the message that the dlls? that get or give the information to or from the driver are missing, and directs me to reinstalling the scanner software. (which I've done). Hmm.

??? I'm just clueless here. Thank you! For your reading and thinking on the subject! *Peace.
I'll be back.

~HP ScanJet 6200C is the model,...another question, after I installed adobe 6, I uninstalled adobe photodeluxe business edition?, thinking it was just an old version is this why this is happening?
Because in the link that you provided (thank you) the 'solution' sends me to adobe photodeluxe,...I'm sorry if I am running in circles, most of this just doesn't make sense to me. THANK YOU for trying to help!

~Thank you Phaedrus for your kind generous self and all this help you've offered. Called HP, and seeing as my scanner is out of warranty I have to pay for support, going to attempt their email support that I found on the link you provided first, and if this fails, I'll have to cough up the money. .
Thank you!

Alicia, this is similar to a problem I had with my Windows XP.  See this link
/pip/Forum67/HTML/000009.html

for all that the guys helped with.  The bottom line was, I found the solution, which was "reinstalling the program".  But...be sure to back up your document files [all the stuff you don't want to take a chance on losing].  Sometimes the problem with figuring how the solution is how to ask the question...and believe it or not, the answer I needed was in the books that came with the computer...when I knew which way to ask the question.

I wouldn’t recommend re-installing the operating system (win98) as a cure to this problem, in my opinion at best you’ll end up no better off and in the worst case scenario you’ll lose all the associated links to all the programs and hardware you have loaded.

The later isn’t (as Ron pointed out in the previous thread) very likely with win98 but puters being puters in this case it really isn’t worth the risk.

Unless i miss my guess (which is entirely possible), i think what Sunshine was suggesting was a reinstallation of Photo Shop, not the operating system, which would probably be like trying to kill an ant with a sledge hammer at this point

You mentioned that the  software suggested you reload your scanner software... my next step would be to uninstall the PhotoShop software, and then reinstall it (I suggest the uninstall first because a reinstall will sometimes not install everythign new, and will occasionaly leave in the offending problem). Sometimes the programs aren't all that smart, and you have to think around what they're telling you to do.

~ !  -- Still haven't figured this out, thank you, thank you for your suggestions and time, really. I'm so frustrated. (It's finally 70 degrees here, this is not what I want to be doing). Oh.

Thought I fixed the TWAIN data thing,  but now getting two new error messages,

C:\SCANJET\PRECISIONSCANPRO\HPLAMP.EXE file appears to be corrupt. Reinstall the file and try again.

And:
A performed an illegal operation and will shut down message when starting scan with the following details>>

HP PRECISIONSCAN PRO caused an invalid page fault in
module HP PRECISIONSCAN PRO.EXE at 015f:0040600e.

Ok so, this isn't for me. I don't know that I have the patience to even try to understand what this means.

Next step. Uninstall and Reinstall Photoshop, then scanner software the same?

ugh. Thank you thank you really. *Peace.

(I need to play outside for a while)

should I not have put that detail info up there? I don't know what it says, or gives away of my comp to people who can read it. this is just too much, I feel so foreign?, I don't know, ready to chuck the sucker out the second story window really.

it's fine A. No one can get anything about YOU from the above... try reloading PhotoShop, and we'll go from there.

~What I think she did, was download a new driver for the scanner and uninstalled it from the registry? before reinstalling it because I had uninstalled and reinstalled it a whole bunch of times and just messed the whole thing up, plus the email support I was getting from hp had been telling me to delete all TWAIN and TWUNK files, so I think I was just making the problem a lot worse off than it needed to be. Anyway, she figured it out, so thank you for your efforts too. I realize like Karilea was saying that asking the question properly makes all the difference, though most of the language? is foreign to me. Ok, off to do some work! *Peace.
