The Street…Part 1 He walked where mint was growing in the alley, put some in his mouth to chew, the rest in his pocket for later. He knew if he used up his laters now, he’d be hankering, he didn’t like hankering. Maybe he was fifty, told time by the sun, and he knew when Sunday was. Sunday he had to stay away from his safety place, from a distance watch the colorful crowd, hear the songs like Rock of Ages. Newspaper talk was alien, his world was a few blocks and the places in pictures in his collection of magazines. Newspapers were for his newsprint floor, stored them with his magazines Of Jamaica and Hawaii, Africa and the Bahamas, places he went every day in dreams. He didn’t talk to people, most like him were either drunks or crazy and the others looked someplace else. He was afraid of mean eyes, they could take his place and pictures, scare the dreams right out of him. |
