I've never been loquacious with the fairer sex,
Never had the courage to risk the heart within my chest.
And so I'd hold my tongue, not knowing where to start,
Always seeking in vanity the words within my heart.

Much too afraid of failing and thus losing my only chance,
I'd keep my conversations from touching on romance.
But, within, my soul was crying out for the nights of bliss,
That I knew were waiting there with your every kiss.

You'd touch me with your questions of my deeper thoughts,
Asking innocently why I called, tying my tongue in knots.
I'd murmur I was thinking of you (as if I had a choice),
Afraid to let you understand the power of your voice.

We'd talk awhile on the phone until the conversation slowed,
You'd say you had some things to do and you had to go.
I'd kick myself for not saying what was really on my mind,
And swear I wouldn't be this way when we talked another time.

Do you ever wonder what it is I wanted to say?
Do you ever think that I might want you in other ways?
Do you ever hold your tongue while waiting for me to start?
Will we two ever rise above the silence in my heart?

The words are there, the need is there, they only need to bloom,
Under the sun of encouragement; but, who gives it to whom?
For if I'm wrong and foolishly let my silent armor slip,
I could lose everything, your love and your friendship.

And so I say, "Goodbye" to you and slowly hang up the phone,
And then I say, "I need you, too.  Are you there alone?"
"Did I say I want you here instead of far away?"
The courage comes so easily when there's no price to pay.

I KNEW you could do it!....

Wheeee!

So poignant, but true of human nature.  Hey, what's the worst thing that can happen?  Tell her!

Karilea - You knew I could do it?  Gee - I always knew I could do it - it was more a question of whether I would do it - lol.  Thank you for your encouragement.

Corinne - What's the worst thing that could happen??  Tell her??  But, Corinne, I wrote this for you!  oops - the cat is outta the bag now

sometimes it takes more courage to remain silent, and know they'll be another call.

What is that you express in your eyes? It seems to me more than all the words I have read in my life.

when the moment is right you would tell..
but then when is that moment....
maybe you must create the right moment...
and rise about the silence of your heart.

what a dilemma huh.....but I think that you have courage enough to let your heart speak.

Welcome back my friend.  Nice to see such a lovely piece from you on your return.  This one is worth saving so it is going in my library because to tell you the truth, I have been there many many times.  It is funny though, when I got the courage, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

LongJohn, this is the most stirring, heartfelt tribute to a 1-900 operator I have ever seen!

LongJohn, when you set your mind to really writing, there is no one better....

You've captured this fear so perfectly.  Excellent write!!

Irish - The coward dies a thousand deaths, but the valiant only once...  thanks for your comments - this poem could apply to person-to-person conversations too - I am still madly in love with my Lorelei

Martie - Thank you for your words of encoragement - I HAVE been gone a long time, haven't I?

Charisma - I have the courage, just not the reason - Lorelei already hears from me how much I love her - but I can remember a time when I did feel this way - a long time ago

Sweet Nan - you've figured me out - now give me a call *wink*

Mark - Isn't that the truth?  Our greatest fears are usually of the unknown, and tend to evaporate when they are confronted with positive action.  Thanks for your kudos.

Victoria - Yanno, I was just thinking that thought myself!  gmta, lady

'Deer - lmao@1-900 operator - That was definitely a classic!  Loved it.  Incidently, perhaps you could interpret something she said to me the last time I called.  She asked for my name, and when I said, "Mike", she jumped all over me about her still having roaches.  What the heck was she talking about?  *confused but all-knowing eyes* - lol

Sweet Lorelei - and don't forget those wonderful wakeup kisses and spooning we do every morning.  Every day of my life starts with me feeling like I'm on top of the world.  I love you for giving that to me.

Paula - Thanks for the welcome home - It does touch a lot of nerves, doesn't it?

Hi ya lil Chilly-Britches - thank you for zeroing in on that stanza.  As I reread the poem, I relaized that it summarizes the rest of the poem.  Now, don't go calling old Balladeer with newfound courage (call me, instead).

Naked one - now don't you go worrying - Lorelei keeps me so happy I can't even think of another woman that way.  Shucks, there's whole days that go by where I don't even fantasize about kicking kitties!

It's like when LngJhnAg proposed to Lorelei.....he was too shy and nervous to do it in person..he called her on the phone...said, "I've been wanting to do this for a long time and just now got the nerve." She said, well, what is it?"....He said, "Will you marry me?..." She replied, "I sure will!....and, "who is this anyway?"....

My wonderings and ponderings
Are of my phone's sheer lack of rings...
I guess with nerves he is so fraught
I'm not even spared a thought?
Better far, love's voice to hear
Conveying caring in my ear
Even if the words aren't there
That he'd really like to share.
Of course, with my luck, on the phone
A voice would bellow "Leave me alone!"

LOL... I like this one bunches, sailor!
