Once upon a time, when all the world seem young and new. Two caterpillars met. They looked into each others eyes, and knew, that this was a great love. And that they would always be together. And, so, side by side, they made a home, and built a life. One day as they were together, lying on the branch of a tree, she said, it's time"! He replied, "time for what"? "It's time to stop all this crawling about, and build our cocoons". He became very frightened. "I don't want to build a cocoon, because it's dark and lonely. It's much safer here just crawling with both feet on the ground". It's what I'm used to. "But, she explained very carefully, this is our destiny. We were created to build this cocoon. Each of us, so we could become, who we're meant to be. I thought we would be together on our journey". But, he was much to frightened. So, she tried to help him. And, in her courageous efforts to bring him along on the journey, she almost forgot to remember her own destiny. Until one day she looked up, and saw the most wondrous sight! A great monarch passing just above. And she remembered! So, very sadly, she looked upon her mate, and with tears in her eyes, softly spoke these words, "I had a beautiful dream that we would grow, and become who we were meant to be together. But you have let fear keep you from becoming who you were meant to be. Iv'e tried to help you, but I can't. Because we each must hear and heed our own inner call to freedom. So, I must leave you, dear one." And, so spring came and she emerged. Before she took flight, she gazed down upon him one last time, as he clung in fear with both feet firmly planted on the ground! A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. |

What a sad poem, Ellie! I have seen a number of relationships where one partner refused to grow, and the results were indeed tragic, but even more tragic not to reach for all that you could be. You wrote this very well, a very fitting metaphor. hugs To love another person is to see the face of God. - Les Miserables Marilyn |

Ellie, This is a sad and sobering poem of great expectations of love and compaionship, that ceases to be realized because of the reluctance of one, yet life goes on and new realities await on the horizon. This is a thought provoking story very well written. Thanks for sharing this with us. Peace! Dennis :^) Moonbeams radiate When the veiling cloud has passed Playful shadows dance Dennis L. White :^) |

Dear Ellie, I was moved & deeply touched by this poem when I read it the first time--Now as I read it again, I am again very deep touched by the awesome poem. How incredibly, and uniquely you have woven your story- using a most perfect imagery. How vididly you depict the woes of an incongruous relationship, where one has stopped growing and trying, leaving the other a broken dream and a shaky future on one's own. It is so sad it must be so with some- More than we probably realize. I am saddened to the core for those who are so victimized by a relationsip gone bad-and the need for revising one's future plans, when the dream could have been a reality-and accessible but for......You have once again gripped me by this most awesome piece- though very sad, it is my very favorite one of yours. awwww so sad. Don't ever give in, if you do you've lost everything you've ever had and everything you hope to gain, but if you carry on your already winning. |

ellie, I just saw your poem and had to answer. In the paper down here today, was an article about the death of millions of Monarch butterflies. They are trying to find the reason. Your poem gives hope to those who try. This is a great poem. Thanks for sharing with us. Hugs, ME |
