You'd think from looking at the surface of haiku, tanka, and the rest, that Japanese poetry is relatively simplistic... Not so... nope. When we begin to delve into its evolution, it becomes quite complex and intriguing. Renga is certainly one of the staples of Japanese poetry, dating back to the 12th century. It's much more intricate than haiku, in that it's linked and becomes a series of poetic sequences that's written by more than one author. The standard practice is to utilize the pattern of the tanka - (i.e. three lines of 5/7/5 syllables, followed by two lines of 7/7). One writer pens the first three lines, and the other does the final two. That all seems relatively simple, doesn't it? If you think so, you might consider perusing our last newsletter. Specifically, you can learn All About Haiku (and Tanka) here. So - We've chosen our partners - Let's give it a whirl... Renga-itis it is... But wait... There's more.. WAKAp... There's the Choka The Japanese originally wrote their sequences in group gatherings and came up with sequences that were approximately 100 stanza's long. These wondrous works were typically non-serious in nature and did evolve about some sort of plot. One poet would begin the diatribe with the first 5/7/5/7/7 stanza, followed by the next, and the next, etc... The stickler was that each stanza had to relate semantically to the one before it (and by definition, the one subsequent). The Japanese had a tendency to create these poetic masterpieces all in one sitting - We can't do that, because we aren't all sitting in one place - but we certainly can write a sequential piece. We won't impose any rules other than that we have to relate to the stanza before us, and let's see what we come up with. Let's sign in on this thread, and follow that order throughout. When we complete the list, we'll start over. This is much like our Community Poetry Forum from days gone by, isn't it? So - Let's do our own Renga-itis with our partners on the side - and I'll start the Choka... Who's in? |
