Moved from a shack to a barn

I found Death sitting at a corner table
His chair tilted precariously against the wall

He appeared to be in his cups
Yet, trying to be as discreet as its possible
For such a skeletal figure to be

And a bit dated

Wayfarers hiding the dark voids in his face
Where one would expect to find eyes

A faded Hawaiian shirt
Covered the pale translucence
That serves for his skin

Improbably thin fingers
Pushed a drink in my direction
Bidding me to join him

"You see me as bones
And smelling of Putrecene
Because you think it"

And when I sat

"My cloak contains both
Everything and nothing
I am what you will"

"As for the matter
Of near-death experience
All, have one daily"

I could see how the evening was to be

Nor am I bringer of life
I sow not, nor reap"

Long stretches of thoughtful silence

"What you call your soul
Does not belong to the flesh
The flesh borrows it"

Broken, only, by cold iterations

And hot swallows of whiskey
