The last day of December- Always make me stop and think... And relive lots of memories, Of when I used to ride, and drink. I recall the country dances, Interspersed with barroom brawls. The pretty buckle-polishers, Their whispered, "Howdy, yall's". Anticipated seasons, With the Finals as my goal- Till at last I sadly realized- "Hey, hoss! You're gettin' old." Now I find myself daydreaming, For that other carefree life... Ad envying the cowboys, Who have family and a wife. I guess I've known some cowboys, Who made money at the game. And carved a niche of honor, In the Cowboy Hall of Fame. But I've known five hundred others- You have never heard their names. We never made it to the Finals, And we never staked our claims- To that moments crowning glory- When you know you've reached the top... With no direction you can turn to, That don't end up in a drop. I don't sit and fondle buckles- Talk about, " a way back when". Bore the boys at the buckin' chutes- With how we rode back then. I still watch a show from time to time, But I watch them from the stands. I guess my pride won't let me... Join the other "also rans". |

Join the other "also rans". ~AHO~ Well said, when one "breaks" a horse or bull they also break a part of self, with every taming of the wild of Mother Earth we destroy something that can not be replaced.

Wow -- this is a great poem. I ain't no cowboy but I certainly relate to the "also ran" feeling portrayed here. |
