When Joseph was an old man, an old man was he,
He married Virgin Mary, the queen of Galilee

      ~ medevial Christmas ballad

virgin lady was a dove
white and feathered
in the temple
angels fed her
priests feared her
God spoke
bring me widowers
give me their rods

from Joseph’s rod
sprung a dove
Joseph feared
the virgin lady
for she was with child

cold night
baby fists beat themselves
upon the dark
cattle moaned
moist breath dampened the air

Joseph stood
by the virgin lady
stars sang
baby voice rang pure
over the cold night
light bore down
upon breast after beating breast
Joseph
knelt
whispered
virgin lady
the Lord be with thee

she whispered

dear Joseph
be not afraid

He is born
