Listening to every heart

Before The War Was Over…

The fiddle plays sweet night, my dear
As purple twilight lights my thoughts
Long cries the whippoorwill, my love,
As jasmine’s fragrance is wrought

The sun shall rise tomorrow, dear
With great purpose streaming forth
Which side shall you battle, m’love?
The South, or with the North?

for ‘neath the valley’s shadows, love
           for ‘neath the slumbering hills
for ‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

We stand upon the battle line
Our brothers straddle each
Could greater sacrifice be ours,
Than entering into this breach?

I shall come back to you, my love,
By foot or by my own horse
I shall come straight back to you,
From the south or from the north

for ‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
           for ‘neath the slumbering hills
for ‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

Do not cry for me, my love,
I must leave for blue or gray
One side needs to win, my love,
Which is right? I cannot say…

A decision must be made, my dear,
Then I must stride on forth,
Shall I wear the blue, or gray?
My heart lies south, my mind is north…

          ‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
          ‘neath the slumbering hills
‘neath the midnight climb of moon
all shall see our love fulfilled

Kiss me once again my dear
Fulfill me with your dreams,
Tarry me no longer, dear,
I must heed a warrior’s scheme

And traveled he into the breach
A strong and sturdy walk
And she, in tears, but steady chin
Knew he traveled the talk…

For ‘neath the valley’s shadows, love,
           Then ‘neath the slumbering hills
Seek me ‘neath the moon, my love,
           That our tomorrows be fulfilled…

This is a song, and a lovely one at that.  The historians go on about how the Civil war was brother against brother.  I have an ancestor who fought on both sides.  I think that may say something about me.

Wonderful write my friend. Impressed, as usual. Went to a Civil War re-enactment down here last month and it was fantastic.  Got down in there with a few of the enactors and learned a lot.  They did the full deal including camping over two nights and you could wander all through the place. Wonderful!
Just like your poem...
