      Shadows  by Candlelight

In rooms where candles softly glow
and shadows fill my mind!...
the ghosts of moments ‘long ago’
pass trailing wisps of  Time!
These ‘phantom forms’ of yesterday,
like echoes from the past,
too soon must dim and fade away;
If only they would last!....

I’d find the dreams of youth again
and ‘loves’ forever lost;
I’d see once more each vanished ‘friend’...
regain what ‘life’ has cost!....

But dreams are naught...and faster fade
than castles in the sand;
I can’t erase what change has made
With but a mortal hand!....

The present swiftly falls in place;
The candles reappear;
and I....the lonely shadows face,
with every lonely fear!

Bruce...Dreams of youth...ya know, I think they are highly over-rated, but if that's true, how come I still have them?

A poignant feeling in this touched me.

As usual, very well done

thank you so much!....to all of you for your most kind words!  I'm a 'night' writer...seem to be 'under the spell' of a muse who is a grand antagonist to Morpheus [I only, most typically write around 4am]....by the glow of an antique brick-hearth fireplace and legions of candles...I truly wish I was a 'morning'/'day' poet [that "child of Aurora's sunrise"]...like so many of you lovely and talented folks on this fine website!
