.

It was mutually
One of those occasions
When conversation fails
To be worthy of effect
And the time involved

So with a certain respect
I kept his silence
As he gazed at the trees—
It still seemed after all
A place he would know
Better than I

The smoke from our cigarettes
Mingled with the leaves
That fell so slowly
Through the morning air

We looked at the old houses
Still mute in their sleep
Where are you going I asked
As he quietly began to fade

Oh the same place as you
He said with his eyes
You’ll find out soon enough
When you get there
